Supporting dignity and respect in health screening for the LGBT+ community.
There is no doubt that health screening saves lives, but for many in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, (LGBT+) community accessing screening can feel very challenging.
Mike Harris is the publications and information manager working within PHE screening Information and Education for Public and Professionals (IEPP) team. Although not a member of the LGBT+ community he has championed this group of individuals, so they are not disadvantaged or feel excluded from health screening, something that could cost their lives. With the intention of developing inclusive screening information that used respectful terminology he sought the advice and help of LGBT+ individuals and LGBT+ representative groups.
Working in partnership at every stage throughout the process Mike has produced outstanding health screening leaflets specifically aimed at the LGBT+ community which provide clear details about what screening may be appropriate for them, what the screens involve and importantly what is available that could ensure their comfort, privacy and dignity.
Health screening leaflets
- NHS population screening: information for transgender and non-binary people
- Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening
- Breast Screening
- Bowel screening
- Cervical screening
- Cervical screening: lesbian and bisexual women
These leaflets address the inequalities and barriers felt by LGBT+ individuals when considering health screening. They sensitively consider the needs of each individual group, how they can be supported and advice regarding making the best choice for them.
